Writing a book – Competitor analysis for writers

Looking for market research for your writing?  Using a competitor analysis is a great place to start

We do competitor analysis to understand the market better, the position we occupy and how to fill the gaps.

When it comes to writing, I like to see my fellow authors as collaborators as opposed to competitors, there is a place for all of us, as we each bring something different to our readers.

Ask yourself a few questions

  • Is there something missing from their offerings?
  • Is there a segment of the marketplace that is going unserved or underserved?
  • What are they doing that seems to be working really well?

The whole point of your competitive analysis is to help you see what’s happening in your industry and determine how best to position yourself.

Never under estimate the importance of positioning and branding – these are the things that help you stand out from the crowd

One of the best places to undertake your research is online in places like Amazon.  Try out all of the different keywords that you might use to search for a book that is similar to you.  What does that tell you about the importance of titles (and more on that in another blog).

  • Make a list of the title, author, date of publication and price.
  • Chose a selection of books that resonate with you and buy them on Kindle or in paperback.
  • Read and learn.
  • What makes your book different?
  • What markets are being left out?
  • How else could you invoke emotions to inspire your target audience to buy your book?

After a browse around Amazon, surf the internet, look at your ‘competitors’ websites and social media, what does that tell you?  How could you collaborate?

Using your research, reflect on what you might need to change about your book and your marketing strategy.

And don’t forget to ask others about the books they have bought in the genre you hope to serve.

  • If you aren’t already journaling, get a journal and start capturing your ideas and thoughts around the book that you want to write.
  • Now think about how you will fit your life around your writing (yes that’s right fit life around writing, to hell with the dishes)
  • Create your timeline, break it up into smaller chunks, write about one of your chunks, pen to paper, don’t think, just write
  • Find a piece of clothing and write a creative story as if it were a friend.
  • Undertake a competitor analysis for your book

  1. I always thought it necessary to avoid books in the same genre but looking at them as research and comparing them to my own writing to see what I can improve on is a great tip.
