There are many ways to discover your ideal reader. Let’s first consider the two usual routes that we might go down. And then we’ll look at the head, heart and intuitive approach.

You can consider the very practical approach used in standard marketing to discover who your ideal reader is. This is a great way to think about your reader from many different angles. You might find yourself getting hung up something like their age, just choose a rough age bracket and move on. It could be that your reader fits into several ideal reader buckets. That’s ok define each and then reflect. Ask what is it that they all have in common. There are no hard and fast rules, you are trying to not get your knickers in a twist when you do this. Have fun and get as close as you can.

Once you have been through the two previous ways to get to who your reader is, consider the head, heart and intuitive and ask which you think your ideal reader falls into. You may be writing your book to one of these and you could consider how to connect to each within each chapter.

Heart

This reader works from their heart and they want a book which will connect with their passion and guide them to make their world a better place.They will have a journal by the side of their bed and will write about how they can turn what they learn into something useful for the world.

Head

This reader is practical and they like systems and processes. You will find them setting goals, and using your book to create accountability. Your book will teach them something practical.

Intuitive

This reader wants a book which asks them to dive deeply into their feelings. They want to be guided into how to explore what your message means to them. They want to evolve and to support others to evolve, expand and transform.

Are they one or all?

Your reader can be one or all of the above. When you structure your book consider who you want to speak to. When you design a chapter framework decide which part speaks to which reader.

Have some fun with this, never get caught up trying to analyse it to the nth degree. It may also evolve as you write. What if as you blog your book and get feedback that you were not expecting?
